Surgical treatment of spontaneous pneumothorax as a manifestation of connective tissue dysplasia syndrome

Abstract

The study examines the presence of signs of undifferentiated connective tissue dysplasia in patients with spontaneous pneumothorax and the effectiveness of surgical methods for the prevention of pneumothorax. The study selected 982 patients, mean age being 24.5 years. The patients were divided into two groups, the group I consisted of 218 patients whose treatment ended with drainage of the pleural cavity due to the patients’ personal refusal to continue the proposed surgical management. The group II consisted of 764 patients who underwent a specific surgical therapy aimed at preventing pneumothorax occurrences. The study revealed the dependence of bullous changes in the lungs on the number of detected phenotypic traits of connective tissue dysplasia. It was found that among the patients with spontaneous pneumothorax who showed symptoms of non-specific connective tissue dysplasia and did not undergo the surgical treatment for pneumothorax prevention, the recurrence within 1 year developed in 50.6% of cases. The use of pneumothorax prevention methods reduces its recurrence to 4.9%.
