“Sketches of purulent surgery” (on the 70th anniversary of the 2nd edition of the monograph and assigning V.F. Voyno-Yasenetsky the Stalin Prize of the first degree)

Abstract

The article is devoted to the 70th anniversary of the publication of the second edition of one of the best monographs in Russian medicine of the twentieth century, “Sketches of purulent surgery”, which was written by a well-known surgeon and a priest V.F. Voyno-Yasenetsky (Archbishop Luka). Authors have discussed sources and circumstances of the writing and publication of the first edi- tion of “Sketches of purulent surgery” (1934) and give some little-known facts from the biography of V.F. Voyno-Yasenetsky allowing to understand the many conflicts that have arisen around the publication of the second edition of this book (1946). The monograph “Sketches of puru- lent surgery”, based on a thorough and comprehensive analysis of a large personal experience of surgical treatment of various purulent diseases, the exact knowledge of topographic ana- tomy and careful study of the ways and patterns of spread of deep and superficial purulent ex- pansions, is of paramount importance for modern surgery. Selfless service to God and sick people of surgeon and Bishop V.F. Voyno-Yasenetsky, unparalleled fortitude and strength of his convic- tions, his wide clinical erudition and remarkable surgical skills should serve as a model for the current generation of Russian physicians.
