Dear colleagues, without reference to the unexplained laws of time, we can only wonder at the rapidity of our movement through it. And now we are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the outstanding surgeon, scientist, writer and philosopher, statesman and thinker whose interviews, articles, advices and sayings had a unique power of moral influence in the former Soviet Union. There is no need in trying to figure out the comments on our admiration for his activities from Nikolai Mikhailovich himself: he has already said everything in his own peculiar way: «I am not offering you any «science»! Is there something you can offer except ordinary surgical work, heavy, sad, pretty much unpleasant?...»
This issue of our journal is our editorial contribution and the contribution of our authors to Amosov’s anniversary date. He was a multi-faceted man and studying in two high schools he finished one of them by creating an original design of the aircraft. So it is not surprising that he developed one of the world’s first heart-lung machines.

Professor Amosov would have been our author, the author of this journal, by definition: it is the multidisciplinary approach and the desire to connect basic scientific research to practical surgical innovations that forms the ideological basis of all the participants of this unusual for Russia’s surgical community publishing project.
