Modern technology of pain treatment: patient-controlled analgesia in postoperative period

Abstract

Patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) is a standard method of postoperative pain management. In the international guidelines and protocols PCA is an alternative to the standard pain treatment. PCA, including different opioid and non-opioid analgesics and local anesthetics has been being used in our clinic for more than 20 years. PCA is mostly used intravenously, but some cases require epidural PCA with administration of local anesthetics. The article presents an overview of international research on the use of opioid and non-opioid analgesics. The problem of PCA safety in patients with acute postoperative pain is also discussed.
