Chronic appendicitis – an independent nosological entity?

Abstract

Relevance. The article is devoted to the problem of chronic appendicitis as a separate nosological entity.

Material and methods. The study subject was the intraoperative material taken from 34 patients with chronic appendicitis. For comparison, we researched intraoperative samples from patients with various appendicular pathology. The control group included six intact appendices. The immunomorphologic research was conducted with p44 MAPK (Erk1) as primary antibodies.

Results. The study established that chronic appendicitis is manifested with expressed specific staining reaction in subserous and muscular layers of appendiceal wall. We have not registered any specific staining nor in other forms of vermix pathology, neither in intact appendix.

Conclusion. The staining on р44 МАРК gives the possibility of clear differentiation of chronic appendicitis from other forms of vermix pathological processes. Expression of р44 МАРК cascade activity in chronic appendicitis proves the critical distinction of this medical condition from other forms of vermix pathology and underlines the duration of the disease. Particularly standing out is the involvement of muscular layer of the vermix, emphasizing the importance of its affection. Apparently, it is the intensive involvement of muscular layer in the pathological process causes its sclerosis and, as a consequence, disturbance of vermix motility and maintaining conditions for retention of the appendiceal contents in its lumen.
