Morphological state of the aortic wall in ascending aortic aneurysm

Abstract

Aim. To assess the morphological state of the aortic wall of the ascending aorta and the proximal part of the aortic arch in patients with an aneurysm of the ascending aorta.

Material and methods. The study included 59 patients with an ascending aortic aneurysm who underwent hemiarch repair. The aortic wall specimen were taken in two zones: 2 cm proximal to the innominate artery (zone A) and the distal anastomosis zone (zone B).

Results. According to the histological examination, the severity of inflammatory infiltration (p=0.810), the degree of damage to elastic membranes (p=0.05), the fibrous changes (p=0.458) of the media decreases in the distal direction.

Conclusions. In patients with an aneurysm of the ascending aorta, the aortic wall at the arch level is morphologically more conserved than the distal zone of the ascending aorta. The formation of distal aortic anastomosis at the level of the arch is the preferred zone for prosthetics of the ascending aorta.
