Influence of preconditioning on morphological changes of gastrointestinal tract in animal model of intra-abdominal hypertension

Abstract

Intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) is frequently present in critically ill patients and it is an independent predictor for mortality. We investigated damaging impact of IAH. Also we studied protective effects of hypoxic-hyperoxic preconditioning on gastro-intestinal tract in animal model of intra-abdominal hypertension. Prospective study included 15 rabbits. The animals were randomly divided into three groups (5 rabbits in each group). 1st group – hypoxic-hyperoxic preconditioning and IAH, 2nd group – IAH alone, 3rd – control group. During 4 h of IAH of 10 mm Hg leads to morphological changes of gut and kidneys in rabbits. Hypoxic-hyperoxic preconditioning is able to protect gastro-intestinal tract and kidneys in IAH. It is confirmed by the less pronounced dysfunction of gastro-intestinal tract and kidneys and agree with morphological samples.
