Abstract

Dear colleagues,

Demand for any scientific journal is determined by its quality. And at once a question how to define the quality arises. Printing art, conveniently-placed material, efficient work by the editorial staff are essential components – mandatory but not decisive. The most important and main thing lies in another – in the quality of scientific (and for surgery – practical as well) articles published, because it is a valuable and high-quality journal that is determined by valuable and original research article. At a low level of research and due to lack of brand-new ideas providing for progressive development in the profession, it is impossible to have a top- rated journal. The level of domestic journals is determined by the level of domestic science, and our mission is to find such authors for whom translational science (from the USA to Russia...) is not enough, for whom scientific analytics is a way of life and not a scientific position.

Reviewing such research articles is a duty of the editorial team and editorial board of the journal. Frankly, it is a complicated and, in many aspects, a subjective process. One of the tasks of this problem is to establish a conflict of interest. Currently, all our articles have a sentence on the absence of conflict, but hardly anybody thinks over the gist of this statement. In such a manner, as a rule, the authors deny their material dependence on the manufacturer of a medical item or medication. But this is a very narrow view of the problem. Besides the financial part, the conflict of interest can be a desire to be published for the sake of a report (let’s say, under a grant), a prejudiced interpretation of literature or own data, to prove own idea, to increase the number of publications by splitting up the research findings into unsubstantiated stages. All such positions should be referred to as “scientific diligence” without which traditions of a contemporary scientific publication are impossible. And moreover, for the surgery journal it is direct interests of our patients; that purpose which, directly or indirectly, defines the whole meaning of our work.

This issue, as we have planned, is larger in volume: if, together with the authors, we will be able to continue to fill the journal with worthy scientific fundamental and practical applied researches, this fact can become a landmark.
