Сardiac magnetic resonance imaging opportunities in the diagnosis of cardiomyopathy

Abstract

The review covers the abilities of cardiac MRI to provide morphological and functional information together with tissue characterization gives it an advantage over other imaging modalities used for diagnostic work-up of cardiomyopathies. Cardiac MRI can detect myocardial edema, infiltration, inflammation and fibrosis. Cardiac MRI with late gadolinium enhancement plays extremely important role in determining the etiology of various cardiomyopathies. Technique of ate gadolinium enhancement may be used for the risk stratification of patients with cardiomyopathies. In some sense cardiac MRI can be regarded as a virtual myocardial biopsy in cardiomyopathies.
