Primary sutureless repair of total anomalous pulmonary venous connection

Abstract

Background. To assess the early and late outcomes of primary repair of totally anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) using sutureless approach.

Material and methods. 38 patients underwent primary repair of TAPVC from January 2015 to March 2021 in our center with the use of sutureless technique were included in retrospective analysis. Median follow-up was 32 (20; 42.5) months.

Results. The 30-day postoperative mortality rate was 5.25% (2 patients). In both cases the death was caused by severe heart failure. No risk factors for death were identified. Postoperative pulmonary venous obstruction in the long-term period occured in 3 (8.3%) patients. The only risk factor for pulmonary vein stenosis was a low patient weight of less than 2.2 kg.

Conclusion. The primary "sutureless" technique for total abnormal drainage of the pulmonary veins is an effective and safe method with a low risk of mortality and postoperative pulmonary venous obstruction in the long term. The only risk factor for postoperative pulmonary venous obstruction was low body weight of patients (less than 2.2 kg) with a sensitivity of 70% and a specificity of 50%.
