Total anomalous venous connection associated with hypoplasia left heart syndrome

Abstract

We report two cases of hypoplastic left heart syndrome associated with restrictive interatrial communication and total anomalous pulmonary venous connection. It is extremely rare, and accounts to 2.3% of all cases of hypoplastic left heart syndrome. In our work, we are reporting two clinical cases of hypoplasia of the left heart syndrome in combination with total abnormal drainage of the pulmonary veins associated with restrictive atrial communication. We concluded that all children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome prenatally diagnosed should be carefully examined for the presence of total anomalous pulmonary venous connection, due to the existing problem of intrauterine hypodiagnosis of this heart defect. Further research is needed to select the optimal surgical tactics, determine predictors of an unfavorable outcome and predict long-term results.
