Surgeon Serge Voronoff. Transplantology and rejuvenation (to the 155th anniversary of birth)

Abstract

At the turn of the XIX-XX centuries, surgical science entered a period of rapid development, due to a number of discoveries and implementations, such as local and general anesthesia, aseptics, hemostatic techniques, etc. Transplantology developed especially dynamically, one of its founders is Alexis Carrel and his followers. All this happened against the background of many scientists' enthusiasm for eugenics, one of the apologists of which was Carrel. The ideas of "improvement of race" by surgery were, in particular, reflected in works on the rejuvenation of the human body. One of Carrel's students, a French surgeon of the Russian origin, Serge Voronoff, successfully developed this undertaking and developed it to the scale of the surgical industry that brought the creator worldwide fame. Our work is devoted to the history of "rejuvenation transplantation", the analysis of the successes and failures of pioneer experimenters.
