Abstract
Dear colleagues,
Studies and reports on the gastrointestinal surgery have been collected and included in this issue dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Professor Eduard Nikitich Vantsyan, corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences, recipient of the USSR State Prize, one of the founders of a very complicated discipline in the thoracoabdominal surgery – oesophageal surgery.
For many years, Eduard Nikitich had administered the department of oesophageal and stomach surgery at the AllUnion Scientific Research Institute of Clinical and Experimental Surgery, studied the problems of the motor function in the oesophagus, suggested methods of total and segmental oesophagoplasty, methods for treating oesopagus hernia and diverticula, as well as hiatal hernia, and designed a special pneumatic dilator for nonsurgical treatment of oesophageal narrowing and cardiospasm, which resulted in a considerable decrease in the need for surgical treatment for this patient group.
By dedicating this issue to Eduard Nikitich Vantsyan, we would like to draw attention of our colleagues, young specialists in particular, to the prominent figures of the domestic surgery, their achievements and contributions to the international surgical science to provide continuous transmission of knowledge from generation to generation and keep the link of times secure.
