Clinical case of cardiac echinococcosis
Abstract
Echinococcosis is a
parasitic disease and affects all human organs. It is most commonly found in
the liver, lungs and brain. We have presented a description of a clinical case
of successful removal of an echinococcal cyst of the heart in a patient with
multiple lesions of the brain, liver and kidneys. The patient had a long
history of the disease, was observed by a neurologist in connection with loss
of consciousness, but epileptic seizures progressed. After a comprehensive
examination (echocardiography, CT scan of the chest and abdominal cavity, MRI
of the brain), the final diagnosis was made: multifocal echinococcosis.
Considering the size of the left ventricular cyst, the risk of rupture and the
ineffectiveness of drug therapy, a surgical intervention was performed –
echinococcectomy of the heart under artificial circulation. Intra- and
postoperative periods were uneventful, a month later the patient underwent
surgery to remove brain cysts and was discharged with improvement. It should be
noted that the success of the treatment of cardiac echinococcosis equally
depends on both timely diagnosis and a successful operation. The latter must
necessarily be supplemented by taking antiparasitic drugs under the supervision
of an infectious disease specialist.
