Laparoscopic procedures for colonic agangliosis in children

Abstract

10-years experience (from 2004 to 2013) in laparoscopic surgery for colonic agangliosis in children is analyzed. 189 pediatric patients, aged from 1 month to 17 years, underwent laparoscopic procedures for different forms of Hirschsprung disease: rectal – 60 (31,7%); rectosigmoidal – 105 (55,6%); subtotal – 17 (9%); total – 7 (3,7%). Among them 30 patients had already been operated on in other clinics for colon agangliosis and complications of primary procedures (from 1 to 6 operations in each patient). All 189 children underwent successful laparoscopic procedures without cases of conversion and mortality. Good anatomic and functional results were observed in the overwhelming majority of patients. Postoperative complications became the indications for repeated surgical procedures in 7 (3,7%) cases. It is concluded that laparoscopic methods can be effective for all variants of Hirschsprung disease in children including the repeated procedures for complications of primary treatment.
