Left ventricular rupture after mitral valve repair

Abstract

A clinical case and literature review are presented describing the development of left ventricular (LV) rupture after mitral valve repair.

The eLIBRARY, PubMed, Google Scholar search engine, and article reference lists were used to search for scientific articles. Relevant review objectives were selected for the period from 1967 to 2022 by the terms: “rupture”, “left ventricle”, “pathogenesis”, “treatment”. Inclusion criteria were limited mainly to the development of LV rupture after open interventions on the mitral valve.

The literature review showed that LV rupture after open interventions on the mitral valve is a potentially fatal complication. The difficulties of LV rupture plastic surgery after mitral valve interventions are as follows: the ventricular myocardium is loose and cannot hold the suture well, poor visualization of the rupture site, technical inaccessibility for suturing through the ventricular wall, which is usually located near the atrioventricular groove and the circumflex coronary artery. The method of LV plastic surgery described by us will allow us to expand the technical capabilities of restoring the integrity of the LV in case of its rupture.
