A case of traumatic rupture of the right atrium

Abstract

Traumatic rupture of the right atrial wall is one of the rare complications of closed chest trauma associated with high mortality risk. Report describes a case of surgical treatment of a patient taken to hospital immediately after road accident in shock state. Diagnostic measures were performed urgently, cardiac tamponade was detected, and the patient was brought to the operating room. After sternotomy, a rupture of the right atrium was detected, and it was sutured. The postoperative course was without complications. The case emphasizes the necessity of high vigilance for heart damage in blunt chest trauma, urgent diagnostics and surgical treatment of these injuries.
