Multidisciplinary approach in patients with colorectal cancer and concomitant cardiovascular diseases requiring surgical treatment

Abstract

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer worldwide. According to the program of state guarantees for free medical care for 2023 and for the planning period of 2024 and 2025 the waiting period for specialized medical care from the moment of histological verification of the tumor for patients should not exceed 14 days. Half of all patients with CRC aged 70–84 years suffer from cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Ischemic heart disease and severe heart rhythm disorders requiring surgical correction deserve special attention. Therefore, with regard to oncologic patients with CVD, it is extremely difficult to meet these deadlines, as doctors are faced with the need to treat two diseases, which can significantly increase the risk of surgical intervention and lengthen the terms of medical care. The medical care of this patient’s category requires a multidisciplinary personalized approach to diagnosis and further treatment in a multidisciplinary hospital. The overall survival rate and quality of life of such patients are determined not only by the stage of colorectal oncologic disease, but also by the severity of cardiovascular pathology, as well as the degree of its compensation.

In this regard demonstrating the results of staged surgical treatment of patients with colorectal cancer in combination with cardiovascular diseases seems to be extremely important.
