Inhibition of microbial colonization of the surface of vascular implants with silver polyacrylate solution as a method of prevention of vascular graft infection

Abstract

Aim. To evaluate the effect of the Lymphoblok solution (LS) on the colonization of the surface of synthetic vascular prostheses by Staphylococcus epidermidis in vitro.

Material and methods. The study focused on four models of synthetic vascular prostheses made of fluorolone-lavsan (Sever, Russia), foam polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) (Bard, USA and Gore-tex, USA) and dacron (Vascutec, UK). Adhesion of the reference strain S. epidermidis bacteria on the prostheses without any antimicrobal agents and in the presence of the silver polyacrylate-based surgical haemostatic agent LS (Menora Labs, Israel) in different concentrations, including with the addition of a protein solution and native blood serum, was assessed by the number of colony-forming units and using atomic force microscopy after 48 hours of exposure.

Results. The number of S. epidermidis cells adhered to the surface of various prostheses varied from 1.73E+05 to 8.73E+06 CFU/fragment. The colonization level positively correlated with surface roughness (rs=0.794; p≤0.05). LS at a concentration of 50% completely suppressed the viability of bacteria and prevented bacterial adhesion to the surface in all observations. At a concentration of 10%, a significant decrease in colonization was observed, up to the absence of bacterial growth, including with the addition of blood serum. LS solution had a pronounced antibacterial effect and effectively inhibited the adhesion of staphylococcal cells to the surface of vascular prostheses of various types.

Conclusion. LS solution is a promising antimicrobial agent for further research in vascular graft infection prevention.
